Marie Tharp is one of the most influential scientists you may never have heard of. Her work fundamentally changed how we understand the structure of the Earth’s oceans. In the mid-20th century, when women were rarely allowed on research ships, Tharp analysed thousands of sonar readings from the ocean floor.
